Westerly Piling In
This view is on the west coast of England in Leasowe Bay looking towards North Wales. I was born on this coast and have lived here all my life. Our sweeping vistas and large changeable skies are a constant inspiration for me. I particularly like to try to achieve a sense of atmosphere and place in a modern impressionist manner.
My process usually takes five stages: monochrome underpainting, colour block-in, major refinements, reflection and deliberation, and final refinements. In preparation for the work I use some combination of plein air references, photographs and visual memory.
